At Salvo Health, we are excited to see that our patients have consistently shown symptom reduction and improved quality of life in as few as four weeks in our program. And what does this mean when it comes to overall healthcare utilization?

Chronic GI conditions typically involve somewhat regular trips to the emergency room or urgent care, increased GI and PCP visits, as well as diagnostic procedures to rule out more serious conditions. Our goal at Salvo Health is to not only improve patient outcomes while providing a better patient experience, but to make healthcare more affordable. To measure this, we conducted a treatment and control study to determine if Salvo Health patients had lower healthcare utilization.

According to the results, Salvo Health patients had far fewer emergency and urgent care visits during this time period. They also saw their GI and PCP almost 50% less. This is promising evidence that a continuous, multidisciplinary care model, not only improves outcomes, but also drives costs down for both patients and the system at large. Tech-enablement is the key to access for these care models and we are excited to be partnering with GI practices, payers, and ACOs to make our mobile app available to those who need it most.

Detailed Results

Note: No notable demographic differences in these groups other than education - Salvo Health patients had a higher percentage of post-bachelor degrees (63% Salvo vs. 42% non).

Methodology

  • 104 people, 35 treatment and 69 control, with chronic GI issues completed a five minute survey. 34% of respondents were active Salvo Health patients who had been in the program for at least 90 days. 66% of respondents had indicated they had GI issues within our start flow but did not ultimately become Salvo Health patients.
  • The survey was 16 questions with a mix of healthcare utilization questions focused on ER, UC, PCP, GI visits and scopes within the previous 90 days and demographic questions around age, gender, location and education.
  • Responses for each cohort were analyzed and compared to determine how much each group had utilized specified parts of the healthcare system in this 90 day period and how the Salvo Health program has affected this usage.
