Dr. Robert Hirten of Mt. Sinai to join Salvo's Clinical Advisory Board - A leading expert in IBD and digital health, Dr. Hirten's research and expertise will advance Salvo's cutting-edge use of home medical devices to anticipate flare-ups for IBD and IBS care.
We are excited to announce that Dr. Robert Hirten, MD, has joined the Clinical Advisory Board at Salvo Health. Dr. Hirten is a renowned expert in the field of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and digital health, and we are thrilled to leverage his extensive clinical experience and pioneering research to further Salvo Health’s mission of supporting GI physicians in providing wraparound care to patients suffering from chronic conditions, including IBD and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Dr. Hirten currently serves as the Clinical Director of the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health (HPI.MS) and the Director of the Digital Discovery Program at Mount Sinai, where he is also a practicing IBD attending. His vast training includes a residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a gastroenterology fellowship at Northwell Health, and specialized expertise in IBD as the Daniel and Jane Present-Andrew Levison Advanced IBD Fellow at Mount Sinai.
As an esteemed leader in the field, Dr. Hirten has played a key role in advancing IBD treatment through his involvement in numerous national committees and initiatives, including his position as the Associate Fellowship Director for the Advanced IBD Fellowship at Mount Sinai and as VP of the New York Crohn’s & Colitis Organization.
Dr. Hirten's contributions particularly stand out for his research on leveraging digital technology and wearable & home medical devices to enhance clinical understanding of disease dynamics and patient outcomes.
In a recent study published in the Gastro Journal, Dr. Hirten and his team demonstrated that wearable devices can predict flare-ups in IBD patients—sometimes weeks in advance—allowing for more timely, targeted interventions. Inside Precision Medicine Magazine covered the study in greater detail.
"Current disease-monitoring methods rely on patients directly interacting with their doctors, through office visits, blood or stool tests, or colonoscopies," said Dr. Hirten. "These methods only assess the disease at one point in time and can often be invasive or inconvenient. Our study shows that wearable devices offer a non-invasive and continuous way to monitor chronic inflammatory diseases, like IBD."
Dr. Hirten’s pioneering work in combining data from consumer and medical devices with machine learning for health prediction is transforming care. His expertise will enable Salvo Health to support local GI practices across the U.S. by blending in-person, gold-standard care with advanced remote monitoring, creating a hybrid care model that offers continuous, coordinated care for both patients and providers.
Dr. Hirten's research utilizes a wide range of physiological indicators, including heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate, oxygen levels, and daily activity patterns. Salvo Health has been a leader in using HRV as both a predictive and clinically useful marker for treatment adherence and progress. Through our 'Whole Self Science' program, patients receive devices to track these variables, along with guidance from cognitive behavioral therapy, GI-focused psychology, and lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, exercise, and microbiome health.
With Dr. Hirten, we look forward to enhancing our ability to deliver personalized treatment plans that integrate cutting-edge digital health tools and medical research. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Hirten to the team—we are excited to collaborate with him to shape the future of GI care.
