Certain groups may need to take calcium in supplement form. Still, it’s important to have a conversation with your doctor or registered dietitian to understand if taking this micronutrient in supplement form is right for you.

If you fall within these groups, it may be recommended for you to take a calcium supplement

  • Postmenopausal women
  • Individuals who avoid dairy products include total vegetarians (vegans) and some vegetarians
  • Persons with a history of weight loss surgery

If you don’t fall into any of the above categories, it’s recommended to eat food sources of calcium first. But if you’re at all concerned about your calcium needs, be sure to speak with your healthcare provider or registered dietitian for further guidance.
