Certain groups may need to take vitamin B9 - or folic acid, which is the form of B9 found in dietary supplements. But it’s important to have a conversation with your doctor or registered dietitian to understand if taking this micronutrient in supplement form is right for you.

If you fall within these groups, it may be recommended for you to take a vitamin B9 (folic acid) supplement

  • Those who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • People with alcohol use disorder
  • Those who have conditions in which their body is unable to as effectively absorb certain nutrients, such as inflammatory bowel disease, or celiac disease)
  • Persons who’ve had weight loss surgery, or surgeries to the GI tract
  • People with MTHFR polymorphism

If you don’t fall into any of the above categories, it’s recommended to eat food sources of vitamin B9 first. But if you’re at all concerned about your vitamin B9 needs, be sure to speak with your healthcare provider or registered dietitian for further guidance.
