Certain groups may need to take vitamin B12, though ultimately it’s best to ask your doctor or registered dietitian if they recommend you take any vitamin or mineral.

If you fall within certain groups, it may be recommended for you to take a vitamin B12 supplement or receive a vitamin B12 injection

  • Those who have conditions in which their body is unable to as effective absorb certain nutrients, such as inflammatory bowel disease, or celiac disease)
  • Persons who’ve had weight loss surgery, or surgeries to the GI tract
  • Older adults
  • Total Vegetarians (Vegan) who do not eat any animal products
  • Taking certain medications, such as metformin and proton pump inhibitors, may be at a higher risk for B12 deficiency

If you don’t fall into any of the above categories, it’s recommended to eat food sources of vitamin B12 first. But if you’re at all concerned about your vitamin B12 needs, be sure to speak with your healthcare provider or registered dietitian for further guidance.
