Hydration is when we replace the fluids our body loses through sweat, breath and waste elimination. We need to get enough fluids on a daily basis to replace those losses.
Water supports a lot of important bodily processes, including keeping our joints lubricated, protecting our tissues, and regulating body temperature. We need water for basic bodily activities, but even more so when active, living in hot climates, and when ill.
You may have heard you need to drink eight, 8 oz glasses per day. Unfortunately, this general recommendation doesn’t take into account individual differences, including body composition or activity level. If you’re a very active person or work long hours in hot temperatures, you may need more water/fluids to replace losses. Your dietician can help guide you when it comes to your specific fluid needs that consider individual differences.
Not only is drinking water important but choosing to eat fruits and vegetables daily is also important since many contain high amounts of water as well. The broth you drink from soups and stews is a third food source that’s hydrating.
